What is Citizen Corps?
Citizen Corps is a national community-based initiative in the United States designed to harness the power of individuals and local communities to strengthen preparedness and resilience in response to disasters, emergencies, and other threats. Launched in 2002 under the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), it aims to educate, train, and organize volunteers to support emergency response efforts and enhance public safety. The program includes partnerships with local government agencies, non-profits, and other organizations to encourage citizen participation in various volunteer programs, such as the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), Neighborhood Watch, and Medical Reserve Corps. Citizen Corps empowers individuals to take action in emergency preparedness, response, and recovery efforts, fostering a culture of readiness and collaboration at the grassroots level.
